There is so much out there today with motorcycles in terms of the newest accessories that help you look you about as you are coasting around and enjoying a nice ride. The thing is, like with a lot of things, what you see is not necessarily what you get. Let’s clarify that: What one rider may be doing to look cool, may compromise his safety in the long run. The biggest issue being, of course, the motorcycle helmet. Motorcycle helmets are expected to look a certain way to keep riders wearing them, but the kind of helmet that you get can really have an impact on your safety on the road. Here’s what you need to keep in mind.
Fit is the most important thing
If you’re looking to make sure that you get the best helmet on the market, the most important thing that you need to focus on is its fit. You could buy the most expensive helmet ever and it would have no effect in a crash because it doesn’t fit you well. You need to take the time and patience to make sure that you have a quality helmet that is going to properly take care of your head with the perfect fit. If you settle for less, you are compromising your safety, which is the entire point of a helmet to begin with. Take this part as seriously as possible.
In some ways, getting a custom designed and fit helmet would be the best option, but you have to remember that with all of the retailers out there, getting a standard built helmet to fit your head perfectly is definitely possible. It just takes time and energy to get it right.
Price doesn’t necessarily guarantee quality
This is another thing to remember when it comes to the best motorcycle helmets out there. Price is not going to guarantee that you are going to be safe in a collision, so don’t be looking for only the top of the line helmets on the market. Focus on the idea that all helmets are designed the same way with the same materials, essentially. You can look at middle quality helmets that, with a proper fit, will give you the same rate of safety that top of the line helmets would.
That being said, you should trust a reputable brand when you are buying a helmet. Don’t go with off brands that aren’t popular online. Do your research and only purchase a helmet from a reputable brand (more on that later).
Know the different parts
As you can figure out, there are different parts of a helmet: the visor, the shell, the vents, the padding, it all comes together to give you final and finished product that you are going to trust your life with. Make sure that you know about the different kinds of visors (tinted, materials), and you can decide whether you want a carbon or plastic shell. Know, essentially, everything that you’re looking for in a helmet before you start shopping. Knowledge is definitely power when it comes to finding the right motorcycle for you.
On that same note, make sure you qualify in the weight of a helmet. Getting one that’s two heavy is going to fatigue your neck and associated muscles if you are riding for long hours every day, so make sure that you pick one that is heavy enough to give you all of the features you need, but not overly heavy. You’ll want to stop wearing it after a while.
Check the safety standards
There are a series of different certifications and tests that are done to assure the safety and security of your helmet, so make sure that you take the time to make the right choice when it comes to the tests that you are looking at in your ideal helmet:
- DOT: This is required for motorcycle helmets around the world. As such, it isn’t the best reputable test out there because it’s the bare minimum that is required. The standards aren’t as high as the other optional tests.
- ECE 22.05: This is the highest European standard out there and it is one of the most rigorous tests out there to pass. Therefore, if you’re looking to see where the helmet brand lies in terms of its quality, this is one of the ones that you should be looking for. It will give you the assurance that you are going to need to survive a crash.
There are, of course, other tests and standardizations, but these are the most critical ones that you should know about to start your search.
Buy from a reputable dealer
This is what we touched on earlier. You need to make sure that you are purchasing a reputable brand that you know and trust, but you also have to make sure that you are buying from the right retailer. Never trust a third party seller, it’s a danger. When you get the helmet, you need to make sure that it has its proper stickers and it is in its packaging. If it is missing any packaging or stickers, it shouldn’t be trusted for safety.
Take care of the helmet
A lot of people forget about this step. You need to properly take care of the helmer in terms of replacing the visor, checking it for imperfections or cracks. You need to store it properly and make sure that you keep it clean and properly cared-for. This will improve the quality and the longevity of your investment. Remember that your life is not worth the risk!
Cool motorcycle helmets are all well and good, but when it comes to making your purchase, you have to remember that safety comes first and it really needs to be your first priority in life so that you can enjoy your life and all parts of it that are important to you, including your loved ones. The best motorcycle helmet is the one that works.
